Five tips for winding down and getting to sleep

Surprisingly, many people find getting to sleep pretty challenging, but with some simple switches and wind down techniques, it can be made far easier.

Write Out Your Worries

Worrying about something can keep you up even longer than necessary, so itโ€™s worthwhile to try and write it out before bed. Writing out a problem can make it seem less daunting and may even trigger some ideas for a solution.

Chill Time

Before even getting into bed, you need to begin winding down. Set aside one to two hours a night where you do something relaxing such as having a bath, lighting some candles, reading a book or drinking herbal tea.

Get Some Digital Down Time

Avoid looking at any screens at least half an hour before you want to sleep as the light from digital devices tend to keep you awake and alert. Yes, that means stowing away your phone, tablets and computers and even turning the TV off.

Take Time To Just Breathe

If you arenโ€™t into meditation or yoga, simply sit still in bed or in a chair and focus on deep breathing for a few minutes. This will enable you to refocus your mind before heading to bed.

Choose A Relaxing Scent

Aromatherapy is really effective as a relaxation process.ย  Some scents including lavender, petitgrain, chamomile, geranium, sandalwood and rose are renowned for their sleep-inducing properties.ย Using a lavender essential oil right before bed will tell your mind that it is time to go to sleep.
